Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Newcastle took his league tally for the season to 16 (he has 22 in all competitions), leaving him just one goal shy of his own record for the most Premier League goals scored by a midfielder in one season. Ronaldo banged in 17 during last year’s title-winning campaign, when he scored 25 in all competitions and broke the previous Premier League record of 16 held jointly by Frank Lampard (Chelsea, 2005-06) and Andrei Kanchelskis (Everton, 1995-96)
